Toronto Police Service Community Alert
This information is to alert the community members in 33 division in regards to a recent rash of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) being stolen from vehicles. With the average system costing between$180.00 to $1000.00 dollars there is little suprise why these thefts are on the rise.
Even though many people hide their devices when they park their vehicles they usually don't bother to take down the mount from the windsheild or dashboard. This makes it easy for the thieves to recognize that you have one. If your going to leave the mounting bracket up, do not hide the system in your console or glove compartment. These items are small and easy to conceal and are re-sold easily for quick cash.
Consider a friction mount, instead of the suction cup windshield mount that is easily detectable on or off the windshield as it leaves a smudge mark where it was. Write down the serial number of your device and register it with the maufacturer, and keep a copy for your own records. If your GPS comes with a password or pin combination lock feature, make the code very difficult so that theives can't crack it.
Just remember to leave all traces of the device out of sight and keep your windows and doors locked. Remember to report any and all suspicious behaviour to the Police.
