Compost Day
On Saturday, May 5th, 2007 residents of Ward 33 descended on the Pleasant View Community Centre and Bellbury Park to take advantage of Councillor Shelley Carroll's free compost giveaway. Over the course of the morning, we gave away close to 100 tonnes of free compost in one of our most successful events of the year. Like last year, Compost Day brings people from all across the ward to load up there cars with fresh compost for the spring planting season. Unlike last year, the number of people attending this year's event greatly exceeded expectations. This caused some unforeseen problems with traffic on Van Horne Ave. People arriving early had parked cars both in the parking lot and on both sides of the road narrowing traffic flow to one lane. Unfortunately, staff were forced to call Toronto Police officers to the scene to help clear the road and get traffic flowing again.
Councillor Carroll and her staff would like to apologize to the residents living along Van Horne Ave for any inconvenience that our event might have caused. It is wonderful that this event is so well attended by our community but it has become clear to us that sites such as Bellbury Park are no longer large enough to host an event like this. We have decided that next years event will take place on a larger site that can provide more space for parking, waiting and loading, and will cause less disruption to normal traffic flow.
Thank you to all who attended. If you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to contact our office.
Happy Planting!
